The PG Department of Social Work of SVPK Arts & Science College is the centre for education, training and research in the field of Social Work. The college started the PG Department of Social Work from 2019-2020 and offers both BSW (Bachelor of Social Work) and MSW (Master of Social Work) programmes with specialisation in Medical & Psychiatric Setting and Community Development. The department observes all the important days and conducts many seminars and workshops for the benefit of the students in particular and the society in general. The students are trained in reputed organisations, institutions, government offices, NGOs and hospitals inside and outside Kerala. Both the graduate and postgraduate students learn professionalism, professional code of conduct and values during their tenure at SVPK College. The Department gives much emphasis to the practical ways of learning – Learn by Doing – inside and outside the classrooms.
OBRERO – the Social Work Students Association is established for initiating the skills and talents of Social Work students and to help them learn the professional practice during the course of their study. The association aims to set a role model for teamwork and unity among the students of Social Work. Every year, the association conducts 30 to 40 programmes at the department level, college level and community level for creating awareness and enhancing the skills and capacity of the Social Work students. Resource persons from various fields are invited to lead technical sessions for the students. The activities include day observances, celebrations and awareness campaigns on different occasions such as World Population Day, World Paper Bag Day, World Youth Skill Day, International Day for Social Justice, Kargil Vijay Diwas, World Tribal Day, International Youth Day, National Teachers Day, World Suicide Prevention Day, International Day for Peace, World Mental Health Day, International Day of Girl Child, International Day for Eradication of Poverty, World Tolerance Day, World AIDS Day, International Day for Person with Disability, World Human Rights Day, International Day for the Elimination of all Kinds of Violence against Women (Orange the world campaign), World Social Justice Day, International Mother Language Day, World NGO Day, International Yoga Day, International Day Against Arug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking and World Social Work Day in March every year.
In June 2022, the department won the District Level FIRST PRIZE in the competition held as part of the World Day against Child Labour conducted by the CHILDLINE Malappuram for the Social Work Departments in Malappuram district.
In the year 2023, the department conducted the debut State Level Seminar – Sowome 1.0 in the campus with the participants of students of Social Work from various colleges from different universities.
